How do they work?
Halo Poles are perfect for koala rescue, The easy-lock clamps deploy the pole from 137cm to 9m in under 20 seconds, the lightweight carbon fibre pole is easy to manoeuvre through tall branches, whilst the rubber base plants the pole firmly on the ground for extra stability. Rescuers will hover the halo above the koalas head, which encourages the koala to swiftly descend from the tree to the ground for the rescuers to capture the koala.
Is this safe for the koala?
Yes! It is the safest method of capturing a koala. The halo does not make contact with the koala, it hovers over the koalas head. Powerful Owls are a fierce predator for koala joeys, so when the koala notices something descending upon them from above, the immediate instinctual reaction is to retreat down the tree. This is safer for rescuers, who require a working at heights permit to climb the tree, and it safer for the koala to avoid the koala leaping from the tree.
Is it legal to catch koalas with a halo pole?
It is legal to catch koalas with a halo pole only if done by licensed rehabilitators or authorized personnel under the Queensland Code of Practice for Rehabilitation of Sick, Injured or Orphaned Koalas, which explicitly recommends using a long pole with flagging or halo at the top to safely encourage koalas down from trees while minimizing stress and injury; unlicensed individuals should not attempt rescue and must leave it to authorized rehabilitators .
